All is well with Toyota after a challenging past few months, says Dale Hall, Gulf States area general manager for Toyota Corp. Dale, who is based in Dallas, spoke about the recession of 2008-09 and the toll it took on car sales around the world. Toyota, of course, was not immune from that hardship. Then came the "recall crisis" relating to the accelerator problems that developed in some models of the car. "We have a constant focus on minimizing mistakes," Dale said, "and we place a strong emphasis on teamwork. The team gets recognition, individuals don't." He said the company took some time off to retool is production schedule to meet reduced demand caused by the worldwide recession. Faulty floor mats eventually were identified as the culprit in the accelerator issue, Dale said while declaring that the company is back and is doing well competing around the world. Thanks for your comments, Dale.

Two outstanding Rotarians have been recognized for the dedication to our organization. Beaumont Boyce received a 24-year perfect attendance pin. Congratulations, Beaumont. But Beaumont's dad ... well, John Boyce is in a class by himself. John has a 60-year perfect attendance record in Rotary. He, too, was recognized for his love and dedication to Rotary. Many congrats go to these fine men.

The final Hold-Up report of the 2011 season has been delivered. It came from Past President Karen Hicks who, along with another former past president, Pam Rushing, played host to a couple from Mississippi. Their names are, um, Paige and Rita. The couple's last name has been lost, according to Karen, who said the couple was headed to Durango, Colo., when they got stopped by Amarillo Police Capt. Jeff Lester. Well, this Hold-Up season is over. Thanks, Jeff, for chairing the Hold-Up committee, and thanks also go to Mike Abdoo and Steve Clark for taking charge of the eating and lodging arrangements.

And in a related development ... APD Sgt. Brent Barbee, our lead "arresting officer" with Hold-Up, has begun his long and slow recovery from a horrible fall at home. Jeff Lester reports that Brent has undergone surgery to repair his vertebrae and has begun walking.  Brent's recovery will take time. Let's send him our good wishes and prayers.

Thanks all around belong this week to: David O'Dell for leading us in song; to Pam Rushing for her musical accompaniment; to Teresa Clemons for her invocation; to Melvin Edes for introducing guests and visiting Rotarians; to Tom Knapp for selling Foundation drawing tickets;  to Jeff Neely, Johnny Crowley and Mark Odle for greeting us; and to Mike Good for serving as program chair for August.
