Wheels for February 14
by Denise Blanchard

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!

Cruise Tickets are being distributed, if you haven't picked yours up, please do so. Your only job is to fill out the stubs and return them to Gina. The winning ticket will be drawn at the District Conference on May 2. The winner will receive a cabin for 2 for a 7 day Hawaiian Cruise on August 3-10, 2013.

We continue to bless Amarillo Kids and Parents with our contributions to Kids Cafe'. Our fund has almost reached $1,000. Thank you Rotarians, for being so community minded!

Soon we will return to Snack Pak for Kids as our weekly beneficiary.

Renee' reminded everyone to be thinking about possible fundraising opportunities and jot down your suggestions to be considered. Now that we have completed our commitment to the YMCA for Rotary Park, we have the opportunity to designate a new recipient for contributions.

Put on your green and mark your calendar! On March 14th, we will celebrate St. Patrick's Day with dinner at the Big Texan instead of our usual noon meeting. There is no charge for Rotarians and guests will be charged $16.28 each. Mark your calendars for this great upcoming party!

Riley Hill, CEO Xcel/SPS presented the program today:

A product of Kansas and an engineering alum of University of Wichita, Riley made his way to Amarillo via Denver about 3 years ago. Riley shared with us that the goal of Xcel Energy is to provide safe, reliable and reasonably priced energy for our area. With that in mind, we have a significant load growth that our area is experiencing and there is a need for $1.8 million in new investments to prepare for the future. Currently, SPS serves 50,000 square miles that includes 79 communities in Texas and 14 communities in New Mexico for a total of 376,283 customers. To get the power to the places we need it, the electricity travels through 6,835 miles of high voltage lines throughout Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Kansas and 15,290 miles of distribution lines in Texas and New Mexico. Field trip anyone?? Amarillo has a new substation on Hillside if you are looking for some new scenery, just make sure you admire it from afar!

One of the best things about Xcel, aside from the fact that the power is there when we flip the switch, is that the people of Xcel Energy are there! They utilize supply chain spending of approximately $47 million in the communtities they service, increase taxable values, donate approximately $1.7 million to non-profits and are a part of building a better community by aiding worthy causes like the United Way and belonging to clubs like Rotary. Xcel Energy and SPS are building goodwill and better friendships! Thank you Andy Price, for another great Rotary program!
