Wheels for Feb. 2
by John Kanelis

So, you think the Panhandle is a boring place, bereft of wildlife?
Look closely and you'll see it's far from that kind of place. GeorgeMoore, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, has been recording our wildlife for years and presented a wonderful display of photos to exhibit the wildlife to be found in the area. The vast variety of birds is particularly stunning, from finches, to cardinals, to several species of hummingbirds, roadrunners, egrets, many varieties of raptors (including the National Symbol, the bald eagle). And how about the bighorn sheep George says can be found in Palo Duro Canyon? George said he plans to sell his pictures Feb. 6 at Roosters coffee house, in Puckett Plaza. Proceeds from the sale will go to help CareNet Pregnancy Center; call Roosters to get the time. Thanks for the entertaining program, George.

All hands on deck for the Rotary Foundation Cruise Tickets, which will be distributed this coming week to Club membes. Except the tickets aren't for the usual cruise. Instead, we'll take part in a raffle to win a $1,500 travel voucher at the District Conference in Ruidoso; the winner will be able to use the voucher for a vacation of his or her choice. Club members already have paid for the tickets. Just sign them and return the stubs to Gina, or sell them to friends and family who want a chance for the voucher.

The money for the tickets finances the Rotary International Foundation, with its signature Polio Plus project scoring huge successes. The Foundation reports that India has gone an entire year without a single case of polio being reported. Two more years and India can declare itself polio free. The other countries still reporting cases of the disease are Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. But Polio Plus is making a huge difference in the world. Our money allows the Foundation to keep up this great work.

The Rotary Club of Amarillo Foundation has become a vehicle to enable the Club to pay off its obligation to the YMCA and its Rotary Park complex at 58th and Western. President John Early announced that the Club board has voted to give the Y approximately $18,000 to retire our obligation. But to replenish the Club Foundation total, we need help from our Rotarians. John says the contributions are tax deductible. Let's chip in.

Big thanks go this week to:
President John Early
for presiding.
Doyle Moore and Renee Wilson for leading us in song.
The Rev. Burt Palmer for providing the invocation.
Paul Borchardt for introducing guests and visiting Rotarians.
Dusty Sloan for selling Foundation tickets.
Dale Bippus
and Jeff Neely for greeting us as we walked off the elevator,
and to Dick and Todd Weddington for serving as program chairmen for February.
