Wheels for Feb. 23
by John Kanelis

If we learned anything from the terrible events of 9/11, it is that we need to be vigilant.
That was the message delivered to us by Harry Hueston, associate professor of criminal justice at West Texas A&M University, and an expert on domestic terrorism. The global war on terror will continue long after we're all gone, Dr. Hueston said. He mentioned that we've had 47 known terrorist attacks on the U.S. since 9/11, but there could be many more. Dr. Hueston, with a long career in law enforcement, said that the FBI doesn't report all attacks. He noted that the terrorists aren't Muslim, but they are "radical Muslims." We must be vigilant at all times, he noted. If we see something unusual, "report it" to authorities, he said. Thanks, Dr. Hueston, for your great program -- and for the service you have performed for your country.

Corinna Isbell has a full plate, as she is taking on a huge Rotary District 5730 challenge: Preparing for this year's district conference in Ruidoso, N.M. Here's a link to the place where Rotarians will gather June 8-10, http://www.thelodgeatsierrablanca.com/. Be sure to sign up for this great weekend of fun, fellowship, frivolity ... along with some great Rotary experiences. Our own David Norris, this year's district governor, said the conference will be long on fun and short on plenary meetings.

Past District Governor J.B. Roberts has been named Man of the Year by the Plainview Chamber of Commerce. Congratulations go to our distinguished PDG. Nice going, J.B.

The Rotary Club of Amarillo is now soliciting funds for its Foundation, which has helped pay off the club's obligation to the YMCA's development of Rotary Park. We had envelopes on our lunch tables to make it easier to help restore the Foundation fund. It's tax deductible. Just contribute what you can to help the Foundation, the Rotary Club of Amarillo. As for the YMCA park project, YMCA director Jim Haugen offered a word of thanks to the club for all the work we've done to raise money for this worthwhile project.

Big thanks go this week to:
President John Early
for presiding.
David O'Dell and Renee Wilson for leading us in song.
Cal Harriman for providing the invocation ... and for greeting us along with Dale Bippus.
Teresa Clemons for introducing guests and visiting Rotarians.
Basil Walker for selling Foundation tickets,
and to Dick and Todd Weddington for serving as program co-chairmen for February.
