Wheels for Feb. 9
by John Kanelis

Amarillo's got talent.
Just ask Sheryl Anderson, a local talent agent, who presented an eye-opening program profiling the talent that abounds in our community. "We've been able to use our talent on projects here in Amarillo," Sheryl said, adding that the talent pool in Amarillo often "surprises" those who are new to the region. Sheryl recalled once casting a one-week-old baby for a video production. The baby was sleeping until the very moment the production crew turned the lights on. "Then the baby performed beautifully," she said, "and then the baby went back to sleep when the lights went out." You either have talent ... or you don't. Isn't that right, Sheryl? Thanks for a great program.

Rotary Foundation drawing tickets are being disbursed. Be sure to pick them up, since they're already paid for. Our annual dues reflect payment for the tickets, which will be part of a drawing at this year's Rotary District 5730 conference in Ruidoso, N.M. Fill them out and turn in the short stub to Gina Rodriguez as soon as possible. Remember that we're not drawing for the cruise this year; instead, we'll be drawing for a $1,500 travel voucher.

One more reminder: The Rotary Club of Amarillo Foundation has become a vehicle to enable the Club to pay off its obligation to the YMCA and its Rotary Park complex at 58th and Western. President John Early announced that the Club board has voted to give the Y approximately $18,000 to retire our obligation. But to replenish the Club Foundation total, we need help from our Rotarians. John says the contributions are tax deductible. Let's chip in.

If you have a son or daughter who's about to enter either their junior or senior year in high school, and want them to enroll in this year's Camp RYLA, call President Early. See the District 5730 website for details on what RYLA provides for participating students. It's a life-changer.

Our ranks have swelled by two new members. Brennan Leggett, classification Custom Furs, and Patrick Freeman, classification Wealth Management, are our two newest Club members. They received their Red Badges and will start working toward obtaining their cherished Blue Badge. Welcome aboard, gentlemen.

Speaking of Blue Badge requirements, we heard a mini-classification talk from Mike Abdoo, who came to us recently under the classification of Financial Services. Mike works at Mass Mutual. He spent many years in the furniture business. Mini-classification talks are one of the duties Red Badge wearers must complete to obtain their Blue Badge. Well done, Mike.

Past Club President John Huffaker has taken on a brand new assignment for his beloved Texas Tech University System, as Tech vice chancellor and general counsel. That's the good news. The bad news is that John and Charlotte are moving to Lubbock, meaning that John -- a former Texas Tech regent -- will be leaving our Club. Thanks for your great service to the Rotary Club of Amarillo. And we wish you all the very best on your exciting new adventure.

Big thanks go this week to:
