Wheels for Jan. 26

One in four children goes hungry in Amarillo,
according to Maria Stickel, representing the High Plains Food Bank. She and Smith Ellis delivered a great program on the Food Bank's work to feed the hungry in Amarillo and across the Panhandle. Maria, executive director of the Girl Scouts in Amarillo, and Smith, CEO and president of First Bank Southwest, talked to us about local poverty rates; Maria said "68 percent of Panhandle residents are at or below the poverty level." The High Plains Food Bank isn't just about feeding folks, Maria said. It's also about promoting healthy eating. "We're trying to help curb obesity," she said. Smith's involvement started at the bank, which was able to raise $60,000 along with "raising awareness" of the Food Bank. The bank was able to finance the purchase of a truck for the Food Bank, Smith said. Maria also noted that every dollar one donates to the Food Bank purchases 11 pounds of food to be distributed. It's a great organization. Thanks, Maria and Smith, for a great program.

Last call for Red Badgers to attend a Fireside Chat. The next Fireside Chat will occur at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Happy State Bank's downtown office. This is one of those duties Red Badge wearers must complete to qualify for their Blue Badge. This is where you learn a little more about Rotary, about the Rotary Club of Amarillo, its history and tradition and the great work it does for the community.

The Rotary Club of Amarillo Foundation is a little richer this week. President John Early kicked in $1,000 after Dale Elliott revealed to Club members that John was not wearing a Rotary pin. And ... Sharon and Don Alexander, two of our 2011 Hold-Up "victims," contributed another $50 -- along with a wonderful Christmas letter they sent to friends and family. It seems the Hold-Up experience this past summer was the highlight of their long drive across the nation. The Alexanders live in Virginia and are continuing to spread Rotary cheer along the way.

We all were the recipients of a toast in our honor this past week at a far-away Rotary club. The Rotary Club of Be'er Sheva, Israel, toasted our club and honored our long history in Amarillo. The Be'er Sheva Rotary Club was one of the club's that hosted our District 5730 Group Study Exchange team that toured Israel in May-June 2009. Many thanks for the good wishes, fellow Rotarians. Shalom.

Don't forget to take part in the weekly Rotary Foundation drawing. The pot is getting bigger. It's past $300. Remember that if you draw the winning ticket and then pull the Ace of Spades out of the diminishing deck of cards, you get half of what's in the pot. The rest of it goes to fund the Foundation.

Big thanks go this week to:
President John Early
for presiding.
David O'Dell and ReneeWilson for leading us in song.
Rocky Gafford for providing the invocation.
Mel Darnell for introducing guests and visiting Rotarians.
Bob Russell for selling Foundation tickets.
Dale Bippus
and Jeff Neely for greeting us as we walked off the elevator,
and to Bob Murray for serving as program chairman for January.
