Wheels for March 21 by Julie Ontiveros
A familiar face was seen this week at Rotary as former Club President John Huffaker joined us as guest speaker. John is now the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel for the Texas Tech University System, a position he took in February 2012. In his role, John provides legal counsel to the system and its component institutions, coordinates institutional compliance and oversees legal teams at each university. This, we learned, is an extensive part of many areas at Texas Tech. There are over 43,000 students in the Tech system, with 570 practicing faculty physicians, multiple colleges, schools and extensive research. The Texas Tech University System is comprised of three institutions: Angelo State University in San Angelo; Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (Abilene, Amarillo, Dallas, El Paso, Lubbock and Permian Basin) and Texas Tech University (Fredericksburg, Highland Lakes, Junction, Lubbock, Quedlinburg, Germany, Seville, Spain and Waco).
The Office of General Counsel (OGC) is a division of the Texas Tech University System that provides legal services, advice and representation for the TTU System administration and each of its component institutions. There is no shortage to the services provided by the OGC, as they cover a broad spectrum of issues affecting the entire organization and its students and employees. Through a team of attorneys and professionals, the OGC offers the following areas of practice: Athletic Regulations; Correctional Managed Health Care; Employee, Faculty and Medical Resident Grievance Process; Ethics and Conflict of Interest; General Litigation; Graduate Medical Education; Healthcare Contracting; Healthcare Regulations and Compliance; Medical Malpractice Litigation; Patient Care; Procurement Contracting; Public Information Requests and Open Meetings Regulations; Student Grievance Process; Regulations and Compliance; Transactional Contracting and University Regulations.
John acknowledged the great achievements at the Amarillo campus and noted that the positive economic impact on the Panhandle Region alone is $152 million. Overall, the system has a $202 million annual research expenditure. Our thanks to John and March program chair Shara Hinchey, for an informative program.
Diabetic Camp is coming up June 17-22. Please see Renee' if you wish to recommend a child to attend the camp.
A round of applause to: President Renee' Wilson for presiding; David O'Dell for leading our song with special guest Jenni Bank; Corinna Isbell for the invocation; Karen Hicks for introducing our guests; Greg Green for selling drawing tickets and Dale Bippus and Rocky Gafford for serving as greeters.
