Wheels for May 17 by Denise Blanchard
Today, we were joined by Dr. Bryan Vizzini, Associate Professor of History at WTAMU. In a presentation, Crossing the Line, Drugs, Crime and Immigration Along the Mexican Border, Dr. Vizzini discussed the problems in Mexico as they relate to the numerous drug cartels and the estimated $13.6-$49.4 billion in gross profits they receive from drug sales in the US. The profits go toward purchase of arms from the United States, the lavish lifestyle of the drug lords and is also invested in the neighborhoods of Mexico. He added that historically, the various positions in the government of Mexico have been sold to the highest bidder and that the government lacks a monopoly on the use of force because of the heavily armed drug lords, which makes it difficult to fight crime. The violence in Mexico now extends beyond the largest cities and has impacted travel into Mexico by tourists, and the good that had been done by faith-based as well as medical missions in the past.
Thanks Johnny for another interesting program this month!
