Wheels for May 3
by Julie Ontiveros

It's never too early to plan 150 years down the road when it comes to the water supply, says Emmett Autrey, Director of Utlities for the City of Amarillo. Emmett shared the logistics of our local water system. There are a lot of people that make it easy for us to turn on the faucet or hose. But, as we all know, conservation is critical for the future of the Panhandle: "Every Drop Counts" as this year's slogan reminds us.
According to the website www.water.amarillo.gov: "Water is a precious resource in the Texas Panhandle. Do at least one thing a day to save water. Even if the savings are small, every drop counts. Conserving water is the most effective and environmentally sound way to protect our water supply. The City of Amarillo consistently works to secure additional water rights so that there will be water for generations to come. However, because a portion of the water that the City uses comes from Lake Meredith, the recent lack of rainfall directly affects water levels in the lake which, in turn, affects our water supply." Find more saving tips at the website. Thank you for an informative program, Emmett.

A final payment on the longstanding charitable commitment to the YMCA has been made, completing the total $200k gift to Rotary Park. Jim Haugen from the YMCA expressed his sincere appreciation to the Club for this amazing generosity.

We are planning a Rotary After Hours event for Thursday, June 14, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Bar Z Winery. Heavy hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer will be served and we will take a tour of the winery. Cost will be $20 per person for Rotary members and $35 per person for non-members. **No noon Rotary meeting on June 14.** Please RSVP to Gina by June 4 .
