Wheels for May 31
by Julie Ontiveros

The might bison was the topic today from Don Beard, Park Superintendant for the Caprock Canyon State Park. The park is home to the official bison herd of Texas. There were many millions of bison at one time in this area, but at a low point only 500 remained in the world. That has changed, due to efforts started by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Goodnight and continued by others. In September 2011, 80 descendants of the great southern plains bison herd, unique genetic relatives of the original Goodnight herd, were released to roam 700 acres of grasslands in the park. From a safe distance, visitors can view these indigenous animals in their native habitat. Lots of other things to do at the park in Briscoe County as well, as seen online at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/caprock-canyons.

Thanks to Johnny Crowley for a great month of programs.

Our Rotary After Hours event at the Bar Z Winery is scheduled for Thursday, July 12, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Maps will be provided at a later date. Heavy hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer will be served and we will take a tour of the winery. Cost will be $20 per person for Rotary members, and $35 per person for non-Rotarians.
