Wheels for October 13
by Denise Blanchard

Our October program chair Karen Hicks introduced us to West Texas A&M University Professor of Environmental Science, Dr. Jim Rogers, who spoke to us today about the multi-faceted approach they are teaching students in the Environmental Science program to solving problems. Students graduating from the program do so with 4-5 certifications and the knowledge and experience to provide workable, cost-effective solutions to environmental quality concerns. The program has provided a 100 percent job placement for their graduates, both graduate and undergraduate degrees. They have been working on a number of projects around the world including, water conservation, research on golden algae outbreaks, the BP oil cleanup on the Gulf coast, a project at Lake Tanglewood on algae and phosphorus, workable solutions that protect endangered species but meet the economic needs of an area, and a number of projects in the United Arab Emirates as well as Argentina. His students are getting hands on experience all over the world. Thank you, Karen, for another interesting program for October.

Calling all volunteers for a mission of mercy. Here's the website address if you want to volunteer for the Smiles Project. All volunteers need to pre-register on the website and there are many areas of service available. The project will be in Amarillo on October 28 and 29 and volunteers are needed. The website is WWW.tdasf.org.  The link to volunteer is under Texas Mission of Mercy. Once you open that link, there is another page that will open for the Amarillo event where you can indicate what area of service you would like to help in.

Don't forget that Monday, October 24, 2011 is World Polio Day. Rotarians are encouraged to do anything to raise awareness for Polio during "Polio Wake-Up Across the Continent 2011" week that will follow World Polio Day. Clubs are invited to share their activities via a specially set up Facebook Group page.

We'll soon be discussing some ideas for service.

drew the latest card that wasn't the Ace of Spades in our weekly Rotary Foundation drawing. The pot is over a thousand bucks now. Be sure to buy your ticket for a chance at some big dough. Thanks to Rocky Gafford for providing the Papa Murphy's Pizza that was won by our own Bob Dunstan!

Many thanks go this week to: John Early for presiding
; to David O'Dell and Renee Wilson for leading us in song; to Corinna Isbell for the invocation; to Peter Boyce for introducing guests and visiting Rotarians; to Dusty Sloan for selling Foundation drawing tickets; and Dale Bippus and Jeff Neely for greeting us.
