Wheels for Oct 18 by Corinna Isbell
Is it the truth?
Rotarians know the Four Way Test as a moral code applied
to things that we think, say or do.
Representative Mac Thornberry
believes it prudent to expand the application to things that we read, hear and circulate, particularly
during a presidential election year. False information detracts attention from
the real issues while also wasting a precious and finite resource: time.
Truth is important for the sake of truth. He encouraged us
to seek the truth in all matters,
but concedes that it is harder and harder to figure out exactly what the truth is
for multiple reasons. For example, special interest groups are known to
circulate emails in mass for the ultimate purpose of raising funds. While such
emails may include elements of truth,
they are intended to sensationalize what may be current news or a real event in
order to play on fear and emotions. At a time when technology makes it possible
for virtually anyone to circulate emails and set up a website, he cautions that
errors and omissions abound, sometimes by design.
The Representative also elaborated on several theories,
which may explain the prevalence of erroneous information. One reason is that there
is no accountability for its dissemination.
He cautions that we should explore and
investigate the information as well as the source before taking any action.
While the internet has drastically improved access to good information, it has also
increased the availability of bad information. He pointed out that, with
increased competition among sources, speed
often trumps accuracy in the interest of being the first to break the story.
Finally, he encourages us to be prudent while remaining objective and aware of
our own biases, stating that it is
easier than ever to find someone to affirm our own beliefs and perceptions.
Thornberry is a fifth generation Texan whose family has been ranching in the Texas panhandle since
1881. He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1995 and served as
Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs in the State Department under
President Reagan where he established himself as a leader in national security.
He currently serves on various committees related to emerging threats and cybersecurity. Many
thanks to Bill Summerhill for extending the annual
invitation to Representative Thornberry!! It is always a treat to get the
inside scoop from Capitol Hill.
