Wheels for October 6
by Denise Blanchard

Our October program chair Karen Hicks started the month off with Histories/Mythsteries. Nationally syndicated radio show host, Paul Anderson spoke to us Thursday about some common myths associated with the Vietnam War and how historical facts and myths affect our perspectives. He mentioned several "myths" related to Vietnam and told us what his research has shown to the contrary. He said that 2/3 of those who served in Vietnam volunteered for service in comparison to WWII when 2/3 of those who served were drafted. At the time of the Vietnam War, our forces were the best educated forces ever sent into combat and those who served are better positioned financially, educationally, and psychologically than their peers. He stated that facts don't cease to exist just because they are ignored and that during times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act. Whether you volunteered or were drafted, we sincerely thank our veterans for the sacrifices you made on our behalf!

Calling all volunteers for a mission of mercy. Here's the website address if you want to volunteer for the Smiles Project. The website is WWW.tdasf.org.  The link to volunteer is under Texas Mission of Mercy.

Monday, October 24, 2011 is World Polio Day. Rotarians are encouraged to do anything to raise awareness for Polio during "Polio Wake-Up Across the Continent 2011" week that will follow World Polio Day. Clubs are invited to share their activities via a specially set up Facebook Group page.

We'll soon be discussing some ideas for service. Thanks to everyone who took the time Thursday to offer some suggestions on ways we can enjoy some fellowship and serve at the same time. We should be able to come up with some great opportunities!

President John Early would like to propose Jeff Busjahn,
Executive Director of The Craig Retirement Community, Classification retirement Center, for membership.

Dale Bippus drew the latest card that wasn't the Ace of Spades
in our weekly Rotary Foundation drawing. The pot is over a thousand bucks now. Be sure to buy your ticket for a chance at some big dough.

Many thanks go this week to: John Early for presiding
; to David O'Dell and Renee Wilson for leading us in song; to John Tyson for his invocation; to Bob Russell for introducing guests and visiting Rotarians; to Basil Walker for selling Foundation drawing tickets; and Dale Bippus and Jeff Neely for greeting us.
