Wheels for Sept 22
by Denise Blanchard

Did you know that 2/3 of the value of publicly traded companies in the US resides in intangible assets? Speaking to a roomful of Rotarians with tons of "Intellectual Property" Amarillo attorney Chris Stewart, spoke about the terms and process for protecting intellectual property by means of patents, trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks and service marks. Chris feels that the amount of intellectual property a community has is a sign of good economic health. This year, 58 federal trademark applications have been filed in Amarillo. He highlighted a number of well-known logos in the city of Amarillo, all of which belong to rotarians in our club. Great program!

President John Early decided to postpone our Ideas Week at the Club until next week. He is looking for ideas on service projects for the Club to take on. He plans to open the floor up to those ideas at next week's meeting. The goal, says John, is think of ways to meld "club fellowship" with "community service." "We need to find a synergy that includes those things," John said. Bring your ideas next week.

We all know Rotarians who haven't been attending our weekly meetings. Give them a call and tell them we're missing them on Thursday.

Rocky Gafford was the latest to draw a card that is not the Ace of Spades. Sorry about that, Rocky. Congratulations to Bill Summerhill who won tickets to the opera and the beef jerky and Larry Offerdahl won a pizza from Papa Murphy's. The pot, by the way, is closing in on a thousand bucks.

Thanks go this week to: President Early for presiding; to David O'Dell for leading us in a cappela song; to John Kanelis for his invocation; to Eddie Melin for introducing our lone visitor; to David Walvoord for selling Foundation drawing tickets; to Dale Bippus for greeting us; and to Greg Green for heading our programs for September. And let's not forget all that Gina Rodriguez does to keep our Club running smoothly. Thanks, Gina, for all you do.

Monday, October 24, 2011 is World Polio Day. Rotarians are encouraged to do anything to raise awareness for Polio during "Polio Wake-Up Across the Continent 2011" week that will follow World Polio Day. Clubs are invited to share their activities via a specially set up Facebook Group page.
