Meeting Report: Gloucester Rotary Club                                          November 20, 2007

Visiting Rotarians

Nick Barletta from the Rockport Club, and Jim Mathews.

Guests of Rotarians

Sue Ellis had her daughter, Breanna, as her guest.  Joe Paris had two guests from Norwich University as his guests; his daughter Jess and the Kevin Wheeler, a former Interact member.  All  guests today were former Interact members.

Interact Club

No Interact members were present today due to the Thanksgiving Holiday.  Kevin Wheeler, a former board member of Interact three years, caught us up on his busy life.  Kevin is going to Norwich on a Marine Corps Scholarship. He is majoring in Mechanical Engineering, he is involved in ROTC at Norwich and has attained the rank of Major.

Makeups

      No makeups were reported today.

Rotarians can now make up on line.  Check out www.rotaryeclubone.org , allow yourself 30 minutes to complete the makeup and make sure you print off a receipt of having completed your on line makeup.  Please hand  your receipt to Carole Sharoff in order for the attendance records to be adjusted.

 Birthdays & Anniversaries

Rudy Macchi celebrated his birthday.  I understand that Rudy is now officially really, really old.  Tony and Jo Corrao celebrated 10 "wonderful" years of marriage.  Jim and Nina Perry are celebrating 34 "wonderful" years, and Sinikka and Joe Nogelo are celebrating 30 "wonderful" years of marriage.  ( Sinikka would not give out the exact number of years, except to give hints.) My math came up with 30.  Sinikka we all know you were such a child bride when you said "I do" to Joe....

Vacations

Jim Perry went to Marco Island, Florida.  Rudy Macchi went to Gettysburg, and is now a self proclaimed expert on Abraham Lincoln.

Happy Thoughts

Barry Pett was happy to be celebrating that at 55 years and 1 month he is still single man.  Roger Armstrong was happy to have his daughter and family visiting.  Rick Doucette was happy the YMCA Gala Auction went well; Rick was the auctioneer.  Steve Kaity  made the inevitable weekly plug for the Chamber of Commerce by announcing the house tour was a success.  Julie Lafontiane was happy the Food Pantry kitchen had new counter tops and signage installed.  Julie was happy the Third Annual Food Drive was once again a success, and especially happy that the Interact Club collects, sorts, packages and delivers the makings of a good Thanksgiving dinner to families that need some assistance.  Jim Marr was happy to have attended the Manchester/Essex Pancake Breakfast.

 Fines

Rotarians who went to the Elks for today's meeting at Cruiseport were fined.  President Bruce fined members who were not wearing their Rotary Pin.

Save the Date:

Gloucester Rotary’s Holiday Party will be held on Wednesday, December 12th at Cape Ann Lanes. Children and grandchildren are welcome – if you don’t have one or two of those – bring a niece/nephew or a neighborhood child.  Plenty of food, beverages and merriment.  Details on time and cost will follow.

To start off  2008 - plans are in the works for an adult cocktail party sometime in January - stay tuned!

December 4th, Teddy Bear Tuesday.   Please bring at least one teddy bear for collection  and distribution to the Police and Fire Departments who will  give out to children who have been traumatized in accidents and other events.  Studies have shown that children's trauma is lessened by holding a teddy bear for comfort.  We did this collection many years ago and would like to make it a yearly event.  Please remember only NEW teddy bears can be accepted.

April 12th is date for the Spaghetti Supper held at the Rose Baker Senior Center to benefit the Senior Center.  Detail will follow as we get closer to the event date.

 ABC of Rotary Moment

Becky Sumner is up for next Tuesday's  ABC of Rotary Moment, Todd Tanger is first backup, Pat Thorpe is the second backup, third backup is Sergey Zemlyanski.  Please have your   ABC of Rotary Moment ready.

Winners and Losers...   Don Sudbay Jr. gave an ABC of Rotary Moment.  Tom Gateley won the money and Pat Thorpe won the flowers.  No winners today in the card raffle.

Speakers....  David Marsh introduced our speaker today, Scott Memhard from the Cape Pond Ice Company.  Scott spoke about the past  history of ice and ice houses on Cape Ann.
