From: Richard E. Hartwig Sent: Thursday, May 19, 2016 4:19 AM To: Richard E. Hartwig Subject: Dar y Servir--expenditures & thank you notes Attachments: 201605190322.pdf To Whom it May Concern-- For the past two years, 2014 and 2015, The Rotary Club of Kingsville, Texas has contributed US$5,000 to the Monterrey, Mexico scholarship fund Dar y Servir (Give and Serve). Half of this money has come from a personal contribution by a Rotary member; half has come from club funds. Dar y Servir Director Susan Moreira has given me extensive documentation on the students who have received the funds and how the funds have been used. For privacy reasons, the documents themselves cannot be posted on the Web. However, I will show them to any interested Rotarian upon request. Please contact me at: kfreh00@tamuk.edu or call my cel phone: 361-355-6655. The attachment provides a summary statement of the expenditures in Mexican pesos. The Mexican peso to U.S. dollar exchange rate was 18.3 on 2/27/2016. A year earlier, it was 15 to one. Dar y Servir is an extraordinarily cost- effective program. A little over US$500 per year will keep a student in high school or in the public Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL) in Monterrey. The UANL does not charge tuition, although there are some fees. Over the 30-year life of the Dar y Servir program, approximately 250 poor students, many of whom live in dangerous areas of Monterrey, have graduated from high school. A growing number are now going on to university studies. Dar y Servir only accepts a students into the program if the program can guarantee continued support for several years. A number now have careers as highly- trained professionals. See the U-Tube on this web site for testimonials to this effect. Also in the attachment are two of the many "thank you" letters we have received from the scholarship students in Monterrey. Dar y Servir--and by extension the Rotary Club of Kingsville--is having an enormously positive effect on dozens of families in the city. We have much to be proud of!
